Modern living without losing the character of the heritage barn

Simon and Sarah wanted to improve the layout and energy performance of their 16 th Century Tithe Barn, which was poorly converted to single a house in the 1960s. They wanted to reuse the existing building wherever possible, but make improvements to the layout to better suit the way they lived in the house.

Coldness, even in the mildest of winters, was a real concern of this property that needed to be solved, without losing the character of the old barn. Working with both an energy consultant and an historic consultant was important to balance these two sometimes antagonistic elements of building design. However, we were able to prepare a design which improved the property’s kerb appeal, solve the layout inefficiencies within the home, and drastically reduce the energy bills.
