A passion for heritage
We’re incredibly proud to share that our apprentice, Drew Pizzey, has been named Sussex Heritage Trust Young Apprentice of the Year — recognising his exceptional commitment to heritage and conservation, both in his academic studies and his work at George & James.
Drew has a genuine curiosity about the places and buildings around him, and a desire to understand what makes them significant before considering how they might evolve. Whether researching the historic development of local settlements, studying historic terraced housing as part of his university work, or contributing to conservation projects across West Sussex, he approaches each challenge with enthusiasm, care and a remarkable attention to detail.
His academic work has taken him beyond Sussex too, including international archaeological collaboration in Sardinia. Across all of his work, Drew combines rigorous historical research with a thoughtful approach to contemporary design — looking for ways to ensure that new interventions respect and enhance the character of the places in which they sit.
Learning through practice
At George & James, Drew is able to bring that passion for heritage into real projects, working alongside the team on sensitive proposals for listed and historic buildings.
His detailed research has already enriched our understanding of the buildings and places we work with, while his contribution to design proposals demonstrates a maturity and technical understanding beyond his years. Just as importantly, his enthusiasm and willingness to ask questions bring a genuine sense of curiosity to the studio.
We believe that good architecture begins with understanding — understanding a building, its history, its context and the people who will use it. Drew embodies that approach, combining careful research with a willingness to explore what might be possible.
