This project reimagines the ground floor of a 1980s home to create a generous, uplifting setting for family life and entertaining.
The clients wanted a sociable kitchen and dining space that felt bright and welcoming, with the flexibility to close the kitchen at certain moments. Strengthening the connection to the garden and bringing more natural light into the home were central to the brief.
The new extension opens the rear of the house to the landscape, creating a refined kitchen and dining suite that feels both elegant and relaxed. Large sliding doors frame the garden and draw daylight deep into the interior, with two rooflights adding a soft, natural glow. The dining room flows from the kitchen for everyday ease and hosting, with discreet pocket doors offering privacy when needed. A sculptural chimney becomes a focal point, shaping the atmosphere indoors and forming an outdoor barbecue area for warm weather gatherings.
A living green roof rests over the gentle slope of the extension, softening the architecture and blending it into the garden. It creates a calming, natural outlook from the upper floors and introduces subtle colour and texture through the seasons.
Storage has been thoughtfully integrated throughout, creating an uncluttered feel. Generous work surfaces and a spacious layout bring ease to daily life, while the reorganised garage and utility areas have been tailored to the clients’ routines. These include a dedicated dog room with its own dog shower, a practical coat and utility space and a separate store.
The extension is finished in a brick that complements the existing house, with slim aluminium doors adding a refined contemporary note. New openings improve the relationship between the interior and the garden, encouraging movement between the two.
