Ground floor extension and internal refurbishment
Alloway Road was a project for a young family expecting their second child. The house, a traditional East London terrace, had become too tight and too inward-looking for their needs. The kitchen felt disconnected from the rest of the house, and the rear garden, though generous, was barely part of their everyday life.
We designed a modest rear extension that opened up the ground floor and created a light-filled, flexible kitchen-diner. A wide rooflight and large sliding doors reconnected the interior with the garden, while a deep timber-lined window seat added a quiet focal point. Internally, the layout was reworked to include better storage, a walk-through utility, and more natural flow throughout.
The material palette, herringbone timber, pale stone, brushed brass and soft tonal shades, created a balance of character and calm. Every decision was about subtlety: how to make the house feel warmer, brighter, more generous, without losing its intimacy.
This was a quiet project, the kind we love. There’s nothing flashy about it. But the difference it’s made to the way this family lives day to day is huge. And for us, that’s the real test of good design.
“We didn’t want anything showy — just something thoughtful and calm. And that’s exactly what we got. The house finally works for us.”
