A stylish internal refurbishment of home in West London
Cromwell Grove was a lesson in subtle transformation. The property a lower ground floor flat within a handsome Victorian townhouse had potential, but its layout was compromised. The kitchen and family room were divided by a structural wall, and access to the garden felt like an afterthought. Our brief was to bring cohesion, connection and light to this part of the home without overbuilding or disrupting the fabric of the house above.
We opened up the kitchen and family room to create one sociable space, improving sightlines, daylight, and circulation. Garden access was redesigned with new Crittall-style French doors, and a frameless rooflight introduced above. A new staircase configuration was explored to improve headroom, while the front lightwell and entrance were reworked to allow for better bike storage, a guest WC and utility.
Materially, the space took on a clean but characterful feel chevron timber, soft grey tiling, oak joinery and rich finishes added depth. The result is a calm, confident interior that supports everyday family life and has turned the previously underused lower level into the heart of the home.
This was a small project that asked big questions about light, layout and flow. It’s proof that you don’t always need to extend to transform the way a home feels.
“George and James Architects carried out our basement renovation with an assured and modern touch… We are delighted with the result which has transformed our living space.”
