From Fragmented Cottages to Seamless Family Home
We are delighted to see one of our recent projects featured in House and Garden. It is always a pleasure to have our work recognised in a publication that celebrates thoughtful design, craftsmanship and enduring homes.
This project was delivered in close collaboration with Vaughan Design and Development, whose expertise and shared commitment to quality ensured that the architectural vision was carried through with precision and care. The kitchen, a central space within the home, was beautifully crafted by Chisholm Design, adding another layer of considered detail and bespoke workmanship to the scheme.
The design brings together a row of nineteenth century workers’ cottages in the South Downs, carefully reconfigured into a unified family residence. What began as a series of separate dwellings with fragmented layouts is now a calm and cohesive home that opens confidently to the surrounding landscape.
Our approach focused on clarity and connection. A new glazed colonnade along the rear elevation links the cottages into a single architectural composition while framing uninterrupted views across the national park. This defining intervention respects the original fabric while introducing light, flow and a strong relationship between house and garden.
Inside, the layout has been reimagined for contemporary family life, balancing character and comfort. Original proportions are retained where possible, with thoughtful detailing and integrated joinery bringing warmth and refinement throughout.
We are incredibly proud of the collaborative effort behind this project and grateful to House and Garden for showcasing it.
