We are so excited to have once again been invited to submit a design into the exclusive ‘Barkitecture’ competition, you can see our last years Agility Desk entry here. The architectural exhibition and competition forms a key aspect of the annual Goodwoof event, with each cutting-edge kennel design entry being auctioned off by Bonhams to raise funds for Jai Dog Rescue who transform the lives of stray dogs in Thailand.
The theme this year is ‘Lounge Access: For the Jet-Setting Dog’ with a challenge to create a sense of calm and tranquility for our four legged friends to accompany us on our travels. In the first instance we looked to our studio dog, Archi, for inspiration for our design.
‘I love going on adventures, and holidays with my pawrents is no exception! But travelling can also be stressful and overwhelming. It helps if I have all my favorite things; my outfits for every occasion, snacks for the journey, and entertainment so I’m never bored. What I would love is somewhere to store all my belongings, making sure I have everything packed and ready to go, as well’ - Archi
When travelling there are many things our dog’s need to take with them, including: a cozy and warm (potentially slightly smelly) bed, toys, doggy workout, plenty of food, water and of course treats, jumpers and coats to keep your doggy warm and looking stylish for any occasion and of course their doggie passport, boarding ticket and contact information. Such an awful lot to carry! We wanted to design a stylish, well-organised trunk for ‘man’s best friend’.
Our design is inspired by a travel traditional trunk, crafted so that it fits perfectly inside the boot of any car, ensuring our 4 pawed friend can unwind, snooze, snack and play whilst waiting to board at the airport, train station or cruise terminal. The Travel Trunk allows both human and dog to remain close and interact throughout the day to reduce anxiety, and making travelling as relaxing a process as possible.
We have collaborated with our friends and neighbours, the fabulous furniture makers, Fisher Morrison in the design and build of the Travel Trunk. Externally the trunk is made from CNC milled English walnut, chosen for its varied grain patten and soft brown colour, providing a perfect backdrop for our very own ‘Goodwoof monogram’.
In contrast, the interior will be spray painted in ‘Goodwoof orange’ water-based gloss which is low in odour and VOCs. The external and internal fittings will be made from ethically sourced materials: vegan leather, recycled cotton or recyclable stainless steel.
Goodwoof is taking place over the weekend of the 18th & 19th May, you can get tickets here.
