Binscombe Bungalow

Tucked away on a detached plot in Godalming, this bungalow comes with an intriguing past. Originally designed by architect John Brownrigg, the home was shaped by the relaxed sensibilities of Californian living—an ethos brought gently into the leafy heart of Surrey.

While undertaking this remodelling project, the current owners were keen not to lose this sense of calm and openness in the remodel, seeking a home that could evolve with their family while still offering moments of ease, connection and hospitality. A carefully considered reconfiguration of the original layout balances accessibility with a renewed connection to the garden. At the centre, a new light-filled corridor links the existing structure to a generous rear extension, where open-plan kitchen, dining and day room spaces spill naturally into the newly landscaped garden—designed to welcome in light, nature, and the gentle rhythms of the day.
Inside, the layout has been reworked to offer both sociable and secluded moments. A sheltered, semi-external east-facing nook captures the morning sun—perfect for coffee and quiet starts—while a snug to the north provides a cosy retreat. The new master suite features a walk-in dressing area and a spacious main bathroom, creating a private sanctuary within the home. A separate guest bedroom offers visitors a quiet corner of their own, and an internal sauna and steam room introduce a restorative, spa-like quality to daily life. Ample storage and a consistent architectural rhythm ensure each space feels calm, coherent and considered.

Outside, George and James have also redesigned the garden, creating as a true extension of the interior into the outside space, with different spaces to sit, play and reflect— making the most of every inch of this adaptable and effortlessly liveable home.
