Hampshire Farmhouse

At George & James, we thrive on the challenge of respecting a property’s rich history while adapting it to the needs of modern family life. Our recent project exemplifies this delicate balance as we work with clients to extend and refurbish their stunning Grade II Listed home.

Originally built in the 17th century, this house has seen numerous alterations over the centuries. The owners approached us with a vision to transform their home into a space that accommodates contemporary living while honouring its stories past. They understand that they are temporary custodians of this heritage asset, and this appreciation guided our design process.

The extension is thoughtfully positioned to the rear of the property, adjacent to the most recent 20th-century addition. This strategic choice ensures that the original 17th-century farmhouse remains untouched, preserving its historical integrity. The new design creates an expansive area featuring a modern kitchen with an island, a dining room, and a cozy seating area that opens up to magnificent views of their garden and the surrounding South Downs. In addition to the extension, we are making minor adjustments to the 19th-century section of the home. These improvements are to enhance the circulation and allow for more natural light, ensuring the house feels both welcoming and functional.

Our approach considers the historical layering of the property, creating a design that feels like a natural progression. By referencing local materials and extending the existing massing, we not only honour the character of the farmhouse but also enhance the overall health of the property.

We are passionate about crafting spaces that reflect both the history of a home and the needs of modern families. This project is a testament to our commitment to creating harmonious living environments that celebrate the past while embracing the future.
