When we first visited our clients here, their house was the furthest from a sanctuary you could have imagined. The hustle of the High Street – and a busy car park – felt far too close, the inside spaces were dark, disconnected and cramped, and the courtyard was the last place you would want to spend time in. But with a bit of serious thinking and a great deal of hard work, a sanctuary is exactly what it's become. The courtyard, with its green walls and feeling of calm, is a space to look through and out into, just as much as it's a space to step out into and enjoy. Natural light is everywhere, the spaces flow and interconnect, and the once-intrusive outside world is the last thing on your mind.
