From the refined symmetry of Georgian townhouses to the sleek modernism of mid-20th-century homes, each period tells a story through its design. In this article, we delve into the defining features of key architectural styles, highlighting their enduring appeal. Georgian Elegance (1714–1837)
Georgian architecture emerged during the Enlightenment. Homes featured refined sash windows, decorative cornices, and understated colour palettes—soft greys, blues, and whites that complemented intricate plasterwork and panelling.
Our Case Study: At Gravel Walk, a Grade I-listed Georgian property, we meticulously restored the classical proportions and intricate detailing. This included repairing original sash windows and reinstating period-appropriate finishes, creating a seamless blend of historical authenticity and modern comfort.
Regency Refinement (1811–1820)
A short but stylish era, Regency architecture embraced grandeur with stuccoed facades, tall windows, and wrought iron balconies. Interiors were sophisticated, with deeper, dramatic tones such as olive greens, rich golds, and stone hues.
Case Study: A project that inspires us is the Royal Pavilion in Brighton, a masterpiece of Regency architecture. Its ornate stucco facade, elegant interiors, and unique blend of classical and exotic styles influence our approach to restoring and designing homes with refined grandeur and timeless beauty.
Victorian Flourish (1837–1901)
The Victorian period celebrated eclecticism, borrowing from Gothic, Romanesque, and Renaissance influences. Bricks in warm reds and browns, ornate gables, and stained-glass windows paired with bold interior hues like burgundy, forest green, and mustard yellow.
Our Case Study: At Wellfield Avenue, a substantial Victorian terraced property was transformed with care and precision. We restored its ornate brickwork, reinstated period-appropriate joinery, and modernized the interior with a striking palette of deep greens and warm tones, maintaining its historical richness while embracing modern comforts.
Edwardian Ease (1901–1910)
A move toward simplicity marked Edwardian homes, often seen in the Arts and Crafts movement. Timber-framed porches, tiled paths, and floral motifs paired with airy interiors painted in soft creams, pastel greens, and dusky blues.
Our Case Study: At Woodville Road, an Edwardian home was thoughtfully modernized while preserving its character. Our work included restoring original stained-glass windows, reinstating timber detailing, and refreshing the interiors with a soft palette of cream and sage, perfectly balancing tradition with contemporary living.
Art Deco (1918–1939)
Post-war optimism brought contrasting styles: a revival of Tudor and Georgian elements alongside the sleek lines of Art Deco. Whitewashed walls, steel-framed windows, and bold, geometric motifs became defining features.
Case Study: One project we admire is the iconic De La Warr Pavilion in Bexhill-on-Sea, an outstanding example of 1930s Art Deco architecture. The building’s striking whitewashed facade, steel-framed windows, and geometric design elements continue to inspire our work in blending modernist innovation with timeless elegance.
Mid-Century Modernism (1930s–1960s):
Clean lines and functional design defined this era, with open-plan living, large windows, and minimal decoration. Muted pastels and earthy tones complemented natural materials like wood, stone, and glass.
Case Study: Our transformation of a 1960s home on Vicarage Hill epitomized mid-century modernism. By enhancing the property’s original layout, introducing expansive glazing, and utilizing a palette of warm woods and soft greys, we celebrated its period features while meeting contemporary living needs.
